The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has called for the prudent and effective deployment of resources provided by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) to Nigerian tertiary institutions to enhance educational development.<\/p>\n

ASUU President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, made this appeal during the inauguration of the TETFund Board of Trustees (BOT) and Governing Councils in Abuja, led by the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman.<\/p>\n

Prof. Osodeke expressed concerns that TETFund resources are not currently being utilized effectively, highlighting that many campus projects initiated as far back as 2014 and 2015 remain unfinished. He emphasized the critical role of TETFund in sustaining tertiary education in Nigeria, given the deteriorating state of the country’s educational system.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
“My prayer is that this council will contribute to transforming our educational system,” Prof. Osodeke stated. He reminisced about a time when Nigerian universities were internationally diverse, with students and lecturers from different countries sharing classrooms and hostels. “Today, the situation is so dire that 90% of the lecturers in a typical university are from the same state,” he added.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Prof. Osodeke urged the new board members to ensure that TETFund resources are managed wisely for the benefit of future generations. “Properly managed, TETFund resources can address many problems,” he noted. He further appealed to the Minister of Education and the board to critically assess how past funds have been utilized, stressing the need for accountability and the completion of pending projects.<\/p>\n
