A Brazilian Supreme Court justice on Wednesday threatened to shut down the local operations of X, unless its\u00a0billionaire owner Elon Musk\u00a0names a legal representative in Brazil within 24 hours.<\/p>\n
The order from Justice Alexandre de Moraes is the latest development in an ongoing feud with Musk\u2019s platform. The company\u00a0clashed with de Moraes earlier this year\u00a0over free speech, accounts associated with the far-right and misinformation on the platform, and it claims to be a victim of censorship.<\/p>\n
Earlier this month, X said it was removing all remaining Brazil staff in the country \u201ceffective immediately,\u201d saying de Moraes had threatened its legal representative in the country with arrest.<\/p>\n
The Supreme Court on Wednesday notified X of de Moraes\u2019 order in a reply to a post from the company\u2019s global government affairs account on the social platform.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn case of non-compliance with the determination, the decision could bring about suspension of the social media network\u2019s activities in Brazil,\u201d the court said in a statement.<\/p>\n
In the United States, free speech is a constitutional right that\u2019s much more permissive than in many countries, including Brazil, where de Moraes in April ordered an investigation into Musk over the dissemination of defamatory fake news and another probe over possible obstruction, incitement and criminal organization.<\/p>\n
Brazil\u2019s political right has long characterized\u00a0de Moraes as overstepping his bounds\u00a0to clamp down on free speech and engage in political persecution.
