The organization emphasized the importance of raising awareness about digital rights and stressed that human rights, which are traditionally protected offline, should also be upheld online.<\/p>\n
Speaking at an e-rights training event for judges and lawyers in Abuja, Angela Uwandu Uzoma-Iwuchukwu, the Country Director of ASF France, highlighted how the recent elections and associated events had negatively impacted civic participation and exacerbated digital rights violations across the country. She pointed to the need for monitoring and deterrence in upcoming elections in Africa.<\/p>\n
As part of their efforts, ASF France is developing a platform under the e-rights project to allow citizens, activists, and journalists to report incidents of digital rights violations, enabling the organization to track and compile verifiable statistics on these violations in Nigeria.<\/p>\n
The organization is expanding its training beyond the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), with plans to include lawyers and judges from Kano, Lagos, and Imo states. These states are the key pilot regions for the project, which aims to improve digital rights and promote freedom of expression, privacy rights, and data protection for Nigerians on digital platforms.<\/p>\n
The Chief Judge of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court, Justice Husseini Baba-Yusuf, emphasized the significance of training on digital rights in an increasingly interconnected world. He stated that the judiciary would ensure that the rights of Nigerians, both offline and online, are protected. The training equips legal professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate the complex digital landscape, including understanding digital technology laws and regulations related to data protection, intellectual property, cybercrime, and internet governance.<\/p>\n
