He described this as the beginning of the end for the coding boom in countries like Nigeria.

Ekekwe pointed out that the decline in advertisements for coding schools and camps signals AI’s growing impact on the industry. He explained that coding is becoming redundant, with many programmers in top tech companies “coding themselves out of jobs” as AI takes over tasks once handled by humans.

According to Ekekwe, the future lies in building algorithms rather than coding, emphasising that sustainable opportunities will emerge in this area as the AI revolution continues. He also stressed the importance of mathematics, referring to it as the “beautiful science of numbers” and the foundation of natural philosophy.

Experts agree that AI-powered coding tools such as ChatGPT, GitHub Copilot, CodiumAI Codiumate, and Amazon CodeWhisperer are redefining the coding landscape. These tools automate code generation, speeding up development processes and continually advancing to produce high-quality, executable code.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang echoed this sentiment, stating that children no longer need to learn to code because AI will handle it. Speaking at the World Government Summit in Dubai, Huang noted, “Over the last 10-15 years, almost everyone has said that learning computer science is essential. In fact, the opposite is true.”

Cybersecurity consultant Francis Nwebonyi, writing on LinkedIn, urged young people in developing countries to focus on invention and technological innovation rather than relying solely on AI. He cautioned that without a deep understanding of coding principles, depending on AI could be disastrous. Nwebonyi advised young people to go beyond coding and master data structures, which are crucial for success in tech and AI careers.

“There will always be a need to optimise things. My advice is, don’t just learn coding; be well-versed in data structures too. Even without AI, someone who only knows how to code may achieve limited results,” he wrote.

By Emmanuel Ogbodo The rise of artificial intelligence is reshaping the global software industry, particularly affecting the business model that trains young people in developing countries for remote software jobs in developed nations.
