This significant infrastructure development is expected to revolutionize public transportation in the capital city.

The Mandate Secretary for Transportation, Rt. Hon. Chinedum Elechi, made this disclosure during the flag-off ceremony for the construction of the Central Business District Bus/Taxi Terminal. The event, which took place at the strategically located Eagle Square, marks a milestone in the FCTA’s efforts to enhance the city’s transportation network.

According to Elechi, the CBD Terminal is part of a broader vision outlined in the Abuja Master Plan, which includes the future underground light rail system. The rail line, planned to run eight meters below the surface, will feature underground train stops and provide an intermodal transfer system for commuters. This will allow passengers to easily switch from underground trains to buses or taxis at the surface-level terminal.

“The rail line will be connected from the Metro Station at the Central Business District, just over there,” Elechi explained. “It will come this way underground. There is a space between the two buildings where the underground train will emerge, and the station will be on the surface. The train will continue to run underground between the two buildings.”

Elechi emphasized that the project is designed to meet both current and future public transportation needs in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The introduction of the underground rail line, coupled with the new bus/taxi terminal, is expected to have a transformative impact on Abuja’s public transportation system. It is anticipated to reduce traffic congestion significantly by encouraging more residents to opt for public transit over private vehicles, resulting in faster travel times, reduced stress for commuters, and lower costs associated with vehicle maintenance and fuel consumption.

In addition to easing traffic, the project aims to enhance the overall safety and reliability of public transportation in the city. The new bus/taxi terminal will feature advanced security measures and modern amenities, ensuring that commuters have a safe and convenient travel experience.

Speaking at the event, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike expressed his commitment to making Abuja a world-class city by upgrading its infrastructure to match international standards. He highlighted that the new transportation facilities at the CBD would replicate the kind of amenities that Nigerians experience when they travel abroad.

“Abuja is a beautiful city. By the grace of God, and through the support of Mr. President, we have continued to expand the road infrastructure. However, if we expand the road infrastructure without linking it to the various bus terminals, I don’t believe we would have achieved our goals,” Wike said.

The Minister underscored the importance of integrating the city’s transport system to improve efficiency and curb crimes associated with informal transit options, such as the notorious “one-chance” incidents. He assured the public that the new bus and taxi terminals would be equipped with tracking systems to ensure the safety of passengers.

Wike elaborated, “What we are trying to do is to integrate and improve our transport system. It is going to eliminate these so-called one-chance crimes that are always committed. Part of what we are doing today is the establishment of robust bus and taxi terminals, where you can confidently say, ‘I’m going to Gwagwalada,’ and if anything happens, we know the vehicle and the driver responsible.”

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has announced an ambitious plan to construct Nigeria’s first underground rail line, a project that will connect the Abuja Metro Station with the Central Business District (CBD) Bus Terminal.
