The caution comes amid reports of some drivers carrying fuel in containers during travel, particularly in response to fuel scarcity.

Dr. Samuel Ibitoye, the State Sector Commander of the FRSC, highlighted the dangers associated with this practice during an interview on Monday in Akure. He noted that the command recently apprehended a fully-loaded commercial bus that was transporting three jerrycans, each containing 25 liters of petrol. The vehicle, which had departed from Lagos and was headed to Jalingo in Taraba State, was flagged after passengers raised concerns.

“We ensured that the driver filled his vehicle tank with fuel before allowing him to continue on the journey,” Ibitoye stated, adding that although road safety laws do not permit the impounding of such vehicles, the incident served as a stark reminder of the risks involved.

The sector commander praised the vigilance of the passengers who alerted the FRSC, enabling swift action. He also urged passengers to actively participate in road safety by discouraging dangerous practices such as transporting fuel in jerrycans.

“As a passenger inside a vehicle, you are expected to get involved in road traffic management,” Ibitoye emphasized. “This passenger knew that if there was a slight spark inside the vehicle and it caught fire, all of them would get burnt to ashes.”

He advised motorists to avoid transporting fuel in jerrycans, recommending that they wait in line at fuel stations instead. “We are appealing to all Nigerians, if you have fuel challenges, do not buy fuel inside a jerrycan and put it inside your vehicle because we don’t want you to die in an inferno or to affect other road users that are just passing by,” he warned.

The FRSC continues to emphasize its commitment to road safety education and crash prevention, urging the public to adhere to safety guidelines to prevent avoidable tragedies.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ondo State has issued a warning to motorists against transporting petrol in jerrycans due to the potential fire hazard this practice poses.
