The incident, which occurred on Sunday in the Wuse area of the Federal Capital Territory, left two police officers dead and three others critically injured.<\/p>\n<p>The police reported that their officers were ambushed by members of the Shi\u2019ite group during a religious procession, leading to the fatal attack. In response, the IG condemned the killings, labeling the act as a direct assault on peace and order in the country.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement released by the Force Spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, the IG expressed his deep outrage over the incident, stating, &#8220;Those who murdered these policemen have murdered peace.&#8221; The statement, titled &#8220;Police Condemn Shi\u2019ite Attack in Abuja, Order Operatives to Hunt for Sponsors, Killers of Policemen,&#8221; highlighted the gravity of the situation and the police force&#8217;s determination to bring the perpetrators to justice.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Nigeria Police Force has vehemently condemned the unprovoked attack by members of the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria, commonly known as the Shi\u2019ite group, on police personnel in Abuja on August 25, 2024,&#8221; the statement read. It further noted that police operatives, acting on the IG\u2019s orders, have already arrested 97 suspects and recovered several weapons used in the attack.<\/p>\n<p>The IG reaffirmed the police force&#8217;s commitment to arresting the remaining suspects and ensuring that the killers of the policemen face the full weight of the law. He emphasized the importance of maintaining law and order and warned against any actions that threaten the country&#8217;s peace and stability.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The unprovoked killings of police officers in the line of duty are highly outrageous and unacceptable,&#8221; the IG asserted, stressing that the force will leave no stone unturned in its investigation. Adejobi, speaking on behalf of the IG, vowed to uncover the full extent of the attack and implement measures to prevent a recurrence of such tragic incidents.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the crackdown on the attackers, the IG extended his condolences to the families of the fallen officers and expressed hope for the speedy recovery of those injured. The IG\u2019s directive reflects the police force&#8217;s resolve to protect its personnel and maintain order in the face of growing security challenges.<\/p>\n<p>The incident has heightened tensions between the police and the Shi\u2019ite group, which has accused the police of excessive force during the procession.
