{"id":45513,"date":"2024-08-26T13:37:37","date_gmt":"2024-08-26T13:37:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=45513"},"modified":"2024-08-26T13:37:37","modified_gmt":"2024-08-26T13:37:37","slug":"eu-invests-more-e5m-to-boost-food-security-others-in-nigeria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2024\/08\/26\/eu-invests-more-e5m-to-boost-food-security-others-in-nigeria\/","title":{"rendered":"EU Invests More \u20ac5m To Boost Food Security, Others in Nigeria"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The European Union (EU) has announced the release of an additional \u20ac5 million to humanitarian partners working in Nigeria to address food insecurity and displacement.<\/p>\n<p>This was disclosed in a\u00a0statement\u00a0published on the EU\u2019s official website on Monday, August 26, 2024.<\/p>\n<p>The EU stated that it has approved an additional \u20ac35 million for humanitarian assistance in West Africa, including Nigeria, due to the region\u2019s ongoing dire humanitarian situation.<\/p>\n<p>The affected regions include Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, Mauritania, the Gulf of Guinea coastal countries, and Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>According to the statement, these countries are affected by food insecurity and displacement caused by growing political instability, persisting and intensifying conflicts, and generalized violence.<\/p>\n<p>The EU noted that the funding will help meet the emergency needs of the most vulnerable people, especially in the areas of food assistance, nutrition, health, water, sanitation, shelter, and protection.<\/p>\n<p><em><i>\u201cIn particular, the funding will be allocated to humanitarian partners working in Burkina Faso (\u20ac10 million), Mali (\u20ac8 million), Niger (\u20ac8 million), Mauritania (\u20ac1 million), Nigeria (\u20ac5 million), and the Gulf of Guinea countries (\u20ac3 million)<\/i><\/em><em><i>\u00a0t<\/i><\/em><em><i>he EU statement partly read<\/i><\/em><em><i>.<\/i><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><i>\u201cThis additional funding brings the total EU aid to these countries to \u20ac160.6 million this year,\u201d <\/i><\/em><em><i>it added<\/i><\/em><em><i>.<\/i><\/em><\/p>\n<p>According to EU data, 10% of the population in Mauritania is facing food insecurity, while in Nigeria, the volatile security situation in the Northeast and Northwest is leading to new and ongoing forced displacements, requiring multi-sectoral support.<\/p>\n<p><em><i>\u201cThe Northeast and Northwest regions of Nigeria are also experiencing a significant increase in the number of malnourished children, while the 2024 lean season is expected to be the most severe in the last seven years.\u201d<\/i><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><i>\u201cThe EU is one of the leading contributors of humanitarian aid in Nigeria. In 2023, the EU allocated \u20ac47.4 million in humanitarian aid.<\/i><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><i>\u201cSince 2014, the EU has provided close to \u20ac482 million to help people in need in the country, including \u20ac31.5 million in 2024,\u201d the statement partly read.<\/i><\/em><\/p>\n<p>According to EU\u00a0data\u00a07.9 million people in North-East Nigeria require humanitarian aid.<\/p>\n<p>It stated that 4.8 million people in the North-East could struggle to find enough food during the lean season (June-August 2024) without humanitarian assistance, which is 14% higher than in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>The EU allocation further enhances international financial support for the Nigerian cause.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The European Union (EU) has announced the release of an additional \u20ac5 million to humanitarian partners working in Nigeria to address food insecurity and displacement.
