Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Lagos, environmental and agricultural specialists emphasized the potential consequences of these irregular weather patterns.

Gloria Bulus, an environmental expert and founder of the Bridge-that-Gap Initiative, warned that inconsistent rainfall could lead to increased food shortages and hunger across the country. She explained that crops requiring specific planting times may suffer due to the unpredictable weather, resulting in poor yields.

“There are certain crops that need to be planted at a particular time of the year for them to thrive, so with these inconsistencies, the harvest of such crops will be affected,” Bulus stated. She also noted that if rains continue during harvest periods, it could lead to crop destruction, further threatening food security and exacerbating poverty among farmers.

Agriculture consultant Charles Idonije also weighed in, stating that while Nigeria’s soil can retain groundwater, the inconsistent rainfall could still pose challenges. He pointed out that food security in Nigeria is more threatened by human factors, such as insecurity from Boko Haram and herdsmen insurgencies, rather than natural causes.

Idonije underscored the importance of government intervention, advocating for the implementation of mechanized farming, improved irrigation infrastructure, better road networks, and enhanced agricultural financing to mitigate the impact of these challenges.

“The major militating factor against food insecurity is the Boko Haram/herdsmen insurgencies that have almost become an incurable disease in the country,” Idonije added.

Experts have expressed concerns that the inconsistent rainfall currently observed across Nigeria may significantly impact food harvests in 2024 and beyond.
