Ipalibo Banigo, a former deputy governor of Rivers State and chairman of the Senate Committee on Health, Secondary and Tertiary, has urged immediate action to address the concerning rates of maternal and newborn death in Nigeria.

In a statement released by her media office on Friday and made available to PUNCH Online in Port Harcourt, Ipalibo, the senatorial district representative for Rivers West in the National Assembly, said as much while attending a critical discussion with female commissioners for health from across the nation, where she was honored as a special guest.

In keeping with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, the Office of the Special Adviser to the President on Health organized the dialogue with the goal of talking about issues pertaining to women’s and children’s health.

The former deputy governor of Rivers State stated in her speech that Nigeria needed to take immediate action due to its unacceptable maternal mortality rate of 512 deaths per 100,000 live births and neonatal mortality rate of 39 deaths per 1,000 live births.

She emphasized that partnerships with various tiers of healthcare service providers could lower the high rate.

“To be honest, we have a lot of challenges ahead of us,” she stated. We cannot accept Nigeria’s figures of 512 maternal deaths for every 100,000 live births and 39 neonatal deaths for every 1,000 live births as the norm. These numbers highlight how urgently coordinated action is required.

She urged the commissioners of health to take up the responsibility of reversing the trend.

“As female leaders in health, we have a special duty to change these trends and save many lives.

“As health commissioners, you play an important role. Even while the constitution divides responsibilities among local governments and basic healthcare centers, states and secondary health services, and the federal government managing tertiary care, the reality is that your state’s health outcomes are your duty. You are the health authority in your state, and you must understand that you are responsible for the full continuum of treatment.

“From my previous experience as acting commissioner for health and deputy governor, I understand how important it is to promote collaboration at all levels.

“I have seen the value of bringing all stakeholders together, including CSOs and development partners. “Your position is critical in ensuring that everyone collaborates toward a common goal,” she stated.

Sen.
