In their place, the NWC has established a seven-member Caretaker Committee to manage the party’s affairs in the state. This move is seen as a critical step to prevent the party from losing its footing in Benue ahead of future elections.

The newly formed Caretaker Committee is chaired by Benjamin Omole, with Prof. Ben Angwa serving as Secretary. Other members include Richard Mzungweve, Hon. James Ornguga, Hon. Terhemen Ngbea, Hon. Helen Agaibe, and Barr. Ali Francis Adah. The committee’s primary mandate is to restore unity within the party and prepare for upcoming Local Government Area (LGA) elections.

During the inauguration of the Caretaker Committee, APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, highlighted the necessity of this intervention, citing the party’s constitutional provisions. “This is an issue that we have to take action on according to our constitution,” Ganduje remarked. He expressed disappointment that the state party’s operations had been disrupted by internal conflicts, emphasizing the need for unity to strengthen the party’s position in Benue.

The crisis within the Benue State APC had been brewing for some time, with factional leadership emerging between supporters of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, and those aligned with Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia. The rift threatened to destabilize the party’s structure in the state, prompting the NWC to step in.

“We had hoped that our state party would function without issues, but human factors have made that impossible,” Ganduje stated. “As a party, we must be united to solve this problem. We followed the constitution and dissolved the Benue State APC executive, constituting a seven-member caretaker committee to oversee party activities and conduct LGA elections. We want you to engage in dialogue with all major stakeholders.”

In response, the newly appointed Caretaker Committee Chairman, Benjamin Omole, assured the NWC that they would work diligently to unify the party. He pledged that the committee would reach out to all factions and stakeholders to ensure that the APC in Benue State operates as a cohesive unit.

However, the move has not gone unchallenged. Hon. Augustine Agada, the factional chairman loyal to the SGF, Senator George Akume, has obtained a court injunction to prevent the dissolution of his executive. The injunction, issued by Justice Theresa Igoche, specifically restrains Dr. Ganduje and the APC NWC from removing the Hon. Agada-led State Working Committee until the expiration of their four-year tenure.

Hon. Agada, who personally served the court order to the APC National Secretary, expressed his determination to uphold the existing leadership. Speaking to journalists, he reiterated that the court’s decision must be respected and that the NWC’s actions were premature given the ongoing legal proceedings.

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has taken decisive action to address the ongoing leadership crisis within its Benue State chapter by dissolving the existing factional executives.
