The National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, has emphasized the devastating impact of terrorism on Nigeria, Africa, and the world, calling for global collaboration to combat this menace. Speaking at the International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism, Ribadu underscored the importance of a united front in addressing the security challenges that have left deep scars across nations.<\/p>\n
The memorial event, held to honor the victims of the August 26, 2011, terror attack on the United Nations House in Abuja, served as a solemn reminder of the ongoing battle against terrorism. Represented by the National Coordinator of the National Counter-Terrorism Centre, Maj. Gen. Adamu Laka, Ribadu highlighted the profound impact of terrorism on Nigeria, from the ravaged communities in the North-east to the heart of the nation’s capital.<\/p>\n
“For us in Nigeria, we have experienced the devastation of countless terror attacks that have claimed lives, destroyed properties, torn families apart, and displaced millions from their homes,” Ribadu stated. He particularly recalled the horrific bombing of the UN House in Abuja, a tragedy that claimed 23 lives and injured over 60 others. “These were people who had dedicated their lives to peace, development, and the betterment of humanity, yet they became victims of the very menace they sought to combat,” he added, paying tribute to the fallen heroes and their families.<\/p>\n
Ribadu’s speech also honored the bravery of security forces who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the fight against terrorism. “Many have laid down their lives so that we may continue to live in peace. Let us also remember the victims who have been injured or traumatized in the line of duty. Their dedication and commitment to preserving our freedom and securing our nation is nothing short of heroic,” he said.<\/p>\n
As the world marked the International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism, Ribadu called on the global community to support and uplift survivors. “In the face of adversity, the strength and resilience of those affected by terrorism stand as a testament to the human spirit. Despite the loss and trauma, survivors continue to show remarkable courage. It is our collective responsibility to ensure their voices are heard, their needs are met, and their rights are safeguarded,” he emphasized.<\/p>\n
The NSA also praised the efforts of international partners and UN agencies, including the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism, for their unwavering support in Nigeria\u2019s counter-terrorism efforts. “This collaborative spirit reinforces the belief that the fight against terrorism is not one that any nation can undertake alone; it requires concerted global effort,” Ribadu concluded.<\/p>\n
In a related development, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, marked the day by commissioning multiple projects at the Guards Brigade, Nigerian Army, Aguyi Ironsi Cantonment, Asokoro, Abuja. The event underscored the Nigerian Army’s ongoing commitment to enhancing the nation’s security infrastructure.<\/p>\n
The United States, meanwhile, reaffirmed its partnership with Nigeria and other African nations in addressing the root causes of instability on the continent.
