The House of Representatives Committee on University Education has announced plans to conduct a forensic investigation into the financial activities of several universities in the South-South Region of Nigeria. The investigation targets the University of Calabar, Cross River State; the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State; the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun, Delta State; the Federal University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State; and other institutions due to inconsistencies observed during the committee’s oversight visits.<\/p>\n

The Chairman of the Committee, Abubakar Hassan Fulata, revealed that the decision for a forensic audit arose from discrepancies and irreconcilable data found in the documents presented by these universities. Additional universities requiring further scrutiny include the Federal University Otuoke, Bayelsa State, and Nigerian Maritime University Okerenkoko, Warri South, Delta State.<\/p>\n

The committee also advised newly established universities, such as the Federal University of Medical Health Science Kwale, Delta State, and the Federal University of Technology Ikot Abasi, Akwa Ibom State, to avoid the mistakes of older institutions, particularly in adhering to federal character principles and managing internally generated revenue.<\/p>\n

Fulata highlighted that the committee had visited over 30 federal universities across 21 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, in recent weeks. Despite logistical challenges, including difficult travel conditions by air, land, and sea, the committee remains committed to its oversight duties.<\/p>\n

During the oversight visits, Victor Afam Ogene, a committee member, emphasized that the lawmakers were not on a witch-hunting mission but were fulfilling their constitutional roles. He stressed the importance of collaboration between the legislature and other arms of government for national development.<\/p>\n
