The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (NNPCL) has attributed the recent fuel scarcity across the nation to adverse weather conditions, including heavy rains, lightning, and thunderstorms. This explanation was provided by the NNPCL Vice President of Downstream, Dapo Segun, during a press conference at the NNPC Towers in Abuja.<\/p>\n
Nigerians have been experiencing long fuel queues at filling stations, with many resorting to buying petrol from black markets at inflated prices exceeding N1,000 per liter. Apologizing for the inconvenience, Segun acknowledged the challenges but assured Nigerians that efforts were underway to resolve the situation.<\/p>\n
“We apologize for the fuel queues springing up across the country,” Segun said. “A number of the causes are beyond our control, but we are working diligently to manage the situation. For instance, the recent rains have made it difficult to navigate through the Estragos channel, causing delays in bringing petroleum products, particularly PMS, into the country.”<\/p>\n
He further explained that lightning and thunderstorms have forced the suspension of both onshore discharge of petroleum products and evacuation from tankers, adding to the difficulties in distribution. Road network challenges have also compounded the problem, especially in transporting fuel to inland regions.<\/p>\n
Segun reassured Nigerians that the fuel shortages in Lagos and other affected areas would be short-lived, as vessels were currently offloading and discharging petroleum products in Lagos.<\/p>\n
