The organization describes the allegations against Ajaero as punitive measures to intimidate and punish him for advocating for workers’ rights.<\/p>\n
In a statement, Amnesty International’s Director, Isa Sanusi, expressed deep concern over the Nigerian authorities’ attempts to harass and intimidate the NLC through threats of arrest and baseless accusations. The organization urges the government to respect the right to freedom of association and protect workers’ rights from abuse.<\/p>\n
Amnesty International highlights a pattern of increasing attempts by the Nigerian government to silence the labour union, including the beating and blindfolding of Ajaero by police in November last year, raids on the NLC headquarters, and threats and intimidation over legitimate strike actions.<\/p>\n
