The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a stern directive to its affiliate members and all workers across the country to immediately shut down the economy if the Nigerian Police arrest the Congress President, Comrade Joe Ajaero. This drastic measure follows a police invitation for Ajaero to appear at their headquarters for questioning, allegedly over accusations of involvement in terrorism financing, among other charges.<\/p>\n
The situation escalated quickly, prompting the NLC to convene an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting at the Labour House. During the meeting, the Congress resolved to request an extension from the police to allow them time to consult with their legal team.<\/p>\n
Addressing the assembled workers who had gathered at the Labour House to show solidarity with the NLC President and to accompany him to the police headquarters, NLC Deputy President, Kabiru Ado Sani, emphasized that the invitation extended to Ajaero was effectively an invitation to all Nigerian workers.<\/p>\n
He stated, “At the end of the meeting, we reached certain resolutions. Part of the resolutions is that, as a committed labour center that abides by the rule of law and due process, we will honor the invitation of the Nigerian police. We are not a faceless organization, but we believe that we need an extension of time after consultation with our lawyers, because this invitation was only extended to the Congress President yesterday and he was asked to report to the police by 10 AM today.”<\/p>\n
Sani further clarified that while the NLC intends to comply with the police invitation, this does not imply acceptance or legitimacy of the charges against the Congress leadership. He warned that if Ajaero is arrested or detained at any point, the NLC will immediately mobilize its affiliate members across the country to down tools and halt all services.<\/p>\n
“This is the resolution because, comrades, this organization belongs to all of us. Therefore, we should do everything possible to safeguard the safety of this organization. We thank you very much, and you should wait for further directives from our leadership,” Sani urged the gathered workers.<\/p>\n
He also called on the workers to remain calm and return to their workplaces, assuring them that any further developments would be promptly communicated by the NLC leadership.<\/p>\n
