This directive was emphasized during the opening ceremony of a four-day capacity-building and training program for 318 National Assembly staff members, with a focus on those in grade levels 10 to 14.

Magaji Tambawal, the Clerk to the National Assembly, presided over the event in Abuja and delivered a keynote address that highlighted the importance of ongoing training and retraining in today’s fast-evolving work environment. According to Tambawal, professional growth and development are essential for maintaining the effectiveness and relevance of the National Assembly in a rapidly changing world.

“You may recall that upon assumption of office, the National Assembly Management under my humble leadership identified human capacity building as a core priority area of focus in our efforts to develop, strengthen, and reposition the National Assembly to carry out its statutory responsibilities,” Tambawal stated.

He stressed that for the National Assembly to lead in modernization, transparency, and accountability, it is crucial that its staff be regularly trained to enhance their efficiency and commitment. Tambawal underscored the importance of adapting to new technologies and staying current with industry trends to foster innovation and productivity within the Assembly.

In 2023 alone, Tambawal revealed that the National Assembly’s administration successfully trained a total of 3,990 staff members across Salary Grade Levels 4 to 16. This effort equipped employees with the necessary skills and aptitudes to fulfill their roles effectively. The current four-day training program, which marks a historic milestone, is designed to promote re-orientation for increased productivity and effective service delivery.

“Only through continuous training and retraining will staff stay up-to-date with industry trends as well as expand their career opportunities to drive innovation, productivity, and success in their fields,” Tambawal remarked. He reminded the participants of the critical role the National Assembly plays in Nigeria’s democracy, noting that the effectiveness of legislative processes heavily relies on the dedication and quality of services provided by the staff.

Tambawal commended the staff for their behind-the-scenes efforts that ensure the smooth functioning of the National Assembly, from scrutinizing bills and organizing committee sessions to conducting legislative research and providing administrative oversight. He emphasized that the capacity-building program is not just an opportunity to learn and enhance skills, but also a significant step toward renewing their commitment to excellence in service to the legislature and the nation.

He further charged the staff to embrace new skills and adapt to the changing demands of their roles to remain relevant and competitive. “As new technologies emerge, industries shift, and job requirements change, I encourage all participants to approach this training with an open mind and a determination to improve. Our collective growth depends on your contributions,” Tambawal urged.

Adding to the event, Ahmed Amshi, the Chairman of the National Assembly Service Commission, delivered a goodwill message emphasizing the crucial role of the staff in supporting the work of elected representatives. He stressed the need for heightened efforts in delivering the highest standards of service, especially in times of change and challenges.

“The public rightly expects efficient, effective, and responsive governance, and it falls on us to provide services that create a conducive atmosphere for that to happen in our respective duties and responsibilities,” Amshi stated.

He reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to enhancing staff training and professional development, streamlining processes, and fostering a culture of innovation and continuous improvement. By empowering the workforce and embracing modern, technology-enabled ways of working, the Commission aims to boost productivity and responsiveness at all levels.

Amshi also pledged to reinforce transparency and accountability within the National Assembly Service, ensuring strong collaboration between the management and the Commission. “We must be a model of good governance, earning the trust of the National Assembly leadership and the citizens we ultimately serve,” he concluded.

The National Assembly has called on its employees to embrace technology and continuous professional development to drive modernization, efficiency, and accountability within the legislative body.
