This position was made clear by NLC Chairman Goodluck Ofobruku and his TUC counterpart Martins Bolum during the 5th edition of the Journalist Hangout organized by the Delta State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Asaba.

Ofobruku and Bolum noted that without the necessary federal directives, they have advised the state officials to hold off on the payment. They emphasized that the labour unions have not yet received the enabling circular or an official start date for the new wage implementation.

Ofobruku highlighted that while the approval for the new minimum wage has been granted, the previous ₦30,000 minimum wage expired on April 19, 2024, and the new wage was expected to take effect from May 1, 2024. He reassured workers that the funds for the new wage have been budgeted, and arrears will be paid once the official circular is received.

“We asked the government to step down the issue of the new minimum wage until we see the template. We’ve been informed that salary adjustments for levels 1 to 5 are ready, while levels 6 and above will be finalized in about two weeks. However, we objected to this phased approach because it could lead to discrepancies,” Ofobruku explained.

The unions expressed concern that implementing the wage increase for lower cadre workers first could demotivate higher-level employees, as it might create situations where pay discrepancies become problematic.

Ofobruku assured workers that the delay is in their best interest and that the NLC is working diligently to ensure arrears are paid. He urged workers to remain patient and trust in the efforts of the labour unions.

In his remarks, Delta State NUJ Chairman Churchill Oyowe thanked the labour leaders for their participation, emphasizing the vital role of the media in bridging the gap between government and workers. He noted that the Journalist’s Hangout provides a platform for unity, dialogue, and collaboration within the profession, and is crucial in helping journalists understand the ongoing efforts to secure fair wages for workers in Delta State.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Delta State have called on the state government to delay the implementation of the new ₦70,000 minimum wage until the template and consequential adjustment details are provided by the federal government.
