Along with the Mandate Secretary of Health for the Federal Capital Territory, the Health Commissioners from all 36 states in Nigeria have called for an increase in the budgetary allotment for health at all levels of government in the Federation.<\/p>\n
They have also expressed support for the Federal Government’s workforce migration policy, while pledging to strengthen the nation’s primary health care systems.<\/p>\n
At the conclusion of a two-day conference on Friday in Abuja, newsmen were informed of this by Dr. Oyebanji Filani, the Commissioner for Health of Ekiti State and Chairperson of the Nigeria Health Commissioners\u2019 Forum.<\/p>\n
“We are advocating for increased budget allocations for health at all levels of government,” he stated. “Health financing was another key issue on our agenda.”<\/p>\n
Filani commended President Bola Tinubu for his substantial investments in the healthcare industry as well as for passing the National Policy on Health Workforce Migration. Recognizing the severe lack of medical professionals in Nigeria, as demonstrated by a recent NHCF evaluation, he emphasized the pressing need for creative approaches to draw in, develop, and retain qualified personnel in the medical field.<\/p>\n
Much of the conversation focused on the implications for Nigerian primary healthcare of the recent Supreme Court decision regarding local government financial autonomy.<\/p>\n
The commissioners reaffirmed their dedication to fortifying PHCs as the cornerstone of the country’s healthcare infrastructure. Filani emphasized the significance of guaranteeing sufficient personnel, education, and the availability of necessary medications and supplies at the local level.<\/p>\n
“To create a position paper on the effects of the Supreme Court ruling on PHC funding, a subcommittee has been formed.<\/p>\n
He declared, “The Nigerian Governors Forum and the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare will be consulted in the preparation of this paper.”<\/p>\n
In reaction to the recent cholera, diphtheria, and mpox epidemics, the Commissioners examined state-by-state readiness and response plans. He applauded the Nigeria Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s efforts and urged states to continue receiving support to improve response and readiness.<\/p>\n
“The Director-General of the NCDC and State Health Commissioners agreed to hold monthly meetings to enhance coordination and readiness,” he stated.<\/p>\n
Concerning the increasing prevalence of non-communicable diseases like diabetes, hypertension, and kidney disorders, he also voiced his concerns.<\/p>\n
We decided to give NCDs top priority in our state health agendas and pledged to start an extensive awareness campaign called He remarked, “Know your Number, Control your Number,” which is slated for the final quarter of 2024.<\/p>\n
“The Director-General of the NCDC and State Health Commissioners agreed to hold monthly meetings to enhance coordination and readiness,” he said.<\/p>\n
He also expressed concerns about the rising incidence of non-communicable diseases like diabetes, hypertension, and kidney problems.<\/p>\n
We made the decision to prioritize NCDs in our state health agendas and committed to launching a comprehensive awareness campaign named “Know your Number, Control your Number,” he said, referring to the last quarter of 2024.<\/p>\n
