The Lagos State Chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has clarified that the N35,000 wage award recently implemented in the state should not be confused with the newly approved N70,000 minimum wage.<\/p>\n

In a statement released on Friday, NLC Lagos State Chairman, Funmi Sessi, expressed concern over comments from certain quarters suggesting that the state was already paying more than the N70,000 minimum wage. She emphasized that the N35,000 wage award is a separate palliative measure and not a substitute for the new minimum wage.<\/p>\n

The NLC called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to establish a wage committee tasked with developing a new wage structure. This structure should start from the approved N70,000 minimum wage and reflect the different cadres and salary grades of all categories of public servants in the state, including the necessary allowances.<\/p>\n

“NLC commends Governor Sanwo-Olu for his commitment to the welfare of workers, as demonstrated by Lagos being the first state to implement the N35,000 wage award palliative for public servants. However, this award should not be considered part of the calculated earned income, as it does not affect the allowances,” the statement read.<\/p>\n

The union also urged private sector employers to comply with the law regarding the newly approved minimum wage, stressing the importance of prioritizing the welfare of workers, who are essential to the success of any business.<\/p>\n
