However, with the introduction of new NFC and SE APIs, developers can now offer contactless transactions for a variety of purposes, including in-store payments, car and home keys, hotel access, transit passes, corporate badges, student IDs, loyalty cards, and event tickets. Support for government IDs is expected in the future.

These NFC and SE APIs will initially be available to developers in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, the U.K., and the U.S., following an iOS 18.1 update. Apple also plans to extend availability to developers in other regions. To access these APIs, developers must meet specific criteria, enter into a commercial agreement with Apple, request the NFC and SE entitlement, and pay associated fees.

For users, making a contactless transaction in an app will be similar to using Apple Pay or Apple Wallet. You can either open the app directly or set it as the default contactless app in iOS Settings. To initiate a transaction, simply double-click the side button on the iPhone.

This move comes in response to pressure from the EU’s Digital Market Act (DMA), which had been urging Apple to open its NFC payment platform to third-party developers. By providing these new APIs, Apple allows developers to bypass Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, potentially avoiding further scrutiny from the EU regarding control over contactless transactions.

By Emmanuel Ogbodo Apple announced that with iOS 18.1, developers will be able to integrate secure contactless transactions directly within their apps using the Secure Element (SE), a certified chip designed to securely store sensitive information on the device, keeping it safe from potential threats.
