This was revealed by the RMAFC Chairman, Muhammed Bello Shehu, on Tuesday in response to recent controversies regarding the actual earnings of National Assembly members.

The breakdown of the senators’ monthly earnings includes a basic salary of ₦168,866.70 and various allowances such as ₦126,650 for motor vehicle fueling and maintenance, ₦42,216.66 for a personal assistant, ₦126,650 for domestic staff, ₦50,660 for entertainment, ₦50,660 for utilities, ₦25,330 for newspapers and periodicals, ₦42,216.66 for wardrobe allowance, ₦8,443.33 for house maintenance, and ₦422,166.66 for constituency allowance.

This clarification comes in the wake of former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s recent claim that federal lawmakers determine their own salaries and allowances contrary to existing laws. Additionally, former Senator Shehu Sani previously alleged that each senator receives a monthly running cost of ₦13.5 million, alongside the ₦750,000 monthly salary prescribed by RMAFC.

Chairman Shehu explained that the commission, legally mandated to set the salaries and allowances of political office holders, distinguishes between regular and non-regular allowances. Regular allowances are paid alongside the basic salary, while non-regular allowances, such as furniture allowance (₦6,079,200), severance gratuity (₦6,079,200), and vehicle allowance (₦8,105,600), are paid once per tenure or as needed. Notably, the vehicle allowance is optional and is provided as a loan that must be repaid before the senator leaves office.

“A closer look at the monthly entitlement of senators reveals that each senator collects a monthly salary and allowances of ₦1,063,860, including basic salary and various allowances,” the RMAFC chairman stated in a press release.

Chairman Shehu also highlighted that, unlike in the past, most public and legislative officers, excluding a few high-ranking officials such as the President, Vice President, Senate President, and Speaker of the House of Representatives, are no longer provided with housing.

He urged Nigerians to verify the official remuneration package for political, public, and judicial office holders published on the commission’s website to avoid misinformation. He also acknowledged that RMAFC lacks the constitutional authority to enforce compliance with the remuneration package, an issue currently being addressed by the National Assembly.

The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has disclosed that each Nigerian senator earns a total monthly salary and allowances amounting to ₦1,063,860.
