The National Judicial Council (NJC) is scheduled to convene on Friday, August 16, to determine the successor of the outgoing Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola. Justice Ariwoola is set to retire on August 22, upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70.<\/p>\n
A reliable source within the Supreme Court disclosed on Tuesday that the NJC meeting would focus on selecting the next CJN. The source, speaking anonymously due to not being authorized to communicate with the press, revealed that the decision made at the meeting would be forwarded to President Bola Tinubu for consideration.<\/p>\n
“The NJC has scheduled Friday to decide on the name to be sent to the President for the position of the next CJN. No name has been forwarded to the President yet as the NJC has not held its meeting,” the source stated.<\/p>\n
As per tradition, the next most senior Justice of the Supreme Court is expected to succeed Ariwoola. Currently, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun holds the position of the most senior Justice on the bench, making her the likeliest candidate for the role.<\/p>\n
Justice Ariwoola, who hails from Oyo State, was appointed CJN on October 12, 2022, following the retirement of Justice Tanko Mohammed. His impending retirement on August 22 will also mark the date for his valedictory session, where he will be honored for his service to the nation.
