The High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, presided over by Justice Sylvanus Oriji, has extended an order that restricts participants in the hunger protests against the federal government to the MKO Abiola Stadium, also known as the National Stadium. This decision was made on Tuesday following an application by Ogwu James Onoja SAN, representing the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).<\/p>\n

During the proceedings, the eleven defendants were neither present in court nor represented by legal counsel. Onoja SAN highlighted a statement by Damilare Adenola, who hinted that the nationwide protests might extend beyond the initial 10-day period. Citing the absence of the defendants and the uncertainty of their next actions, Onoja argued that extending the order was necessary to maintain peace in the FCT.<\/p>\n

Justice Oriji agreed with this argument, ruling that the order of July 31, which initially restricted the protests, would remain in effect. The court has scheduled August 22 for the hearing of the motion on notice.<\/p>\n

Previously, on July 31, the court granted an interim injunction preventing the leaders of the protesting groups from gathering or parading on any roadways, streets, offices, or public premises within the FCT from August 1 to August 10, pending the hearing of the motion on notice.
