Instagram is currently trialing a new feature reminiscent of Snapchat\u2019s popular Snap Maps, tentatively named “Friend Map.” Although this idea echoes Snapchat\u2019s offering, Instagram’s version promises a distinct approach tailored to its platform.<\/p>\n
Meta spokesperson Christine Pai has confirmed that the feature is undergoing testing with a select group of users. However, specifics regarding the testing region or country remain undisclosed. The concept of Friend Map first emerged in February, but details were limited at that time.<\/p>\n
Instagram’s Friend Map allows users to share their location and updates via text or video exclusively with mutual followers or those added to their Close Friends list. Notably, the feature does not support public sharing, which underscores Instagram\u2019s focus on user privacy and safety.<\/p>\n
Historically, Instagram offered a feature that allowed posts to be displayed on a map, but it was private and infrequently used, leading to its eventual discontinuation over a decade ago.<\/p>\n
The future of Friend Map remains uncertain as Meta is known for its cautious approach to feature rollouts, carefully managing testing phases to mitigate bugs and other potential issues. Consequently, users will need to remain patient to find out if this feature will be made widely available.<\/p>\n
In comparison, Snapchat\u2019s Snap Maps enables users to share their location and Snaps with others according to their privacy settings, offering a more interactive mapping experience.<\/p>\n
While Friend Map may not represent a revolutionary advancement, it could provide an engaging new way for users to interact based on their locations.
