On Monday, Samuel Ortom, the former governor of Benue State, issued a call for all factions within the opposition Peoples Democratic Party to lay down their weapons.<\/p>\n
In a statement provided to reporters in Makurdi by his media assistant, Terver Akase, Ortom acknowledged that different viewpoints are inevitable in politics but insisted that the goal of it all is to strengthen democracy.<\/p>\n
The outgoing governor claimed that he and his predecessor, Gabriel Suswam, had a long-standing friendship and mutual respect.<\/p>\n
“Differing opinions and positions are inevitable in politics, but the differences often serve to deepen the democratic process and contribute to enriching discourses within political parties,” he said, quoting Chief Ortom.<\/p>\n
“He emphasizes that, as leaders within the PDP, he and Senator Suswam have a long-standing friendship and mutual respect. They will always find peaceful solutions to any political disagreements by putting the party’s and its members’ best interests first.”<\/p>\n
The former governor urged all parties involved to maintain their commitment and concentrate on the PDP’s common goals and aspirations, just as they have always done.<\/p>\n
He also congratulated PDP members in the state’s 23 local government districts for their nonviolent behavior at the party’s just-completed ward congresses, and he predicted that they would continue in this vein at the upcoming state and local government congresses.<\/p>\n
