This announcement was made by the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, during the commemoration of the 2023 World Habitat Day and World Cities Day in Abuja.

The event, themed “Financing Sustainable Urban Future for All,” highlighted the significant demographic shift towards urban centers in Nigeria. Currently, over half of the country’s population resides in urban areas, and this figure is projected to increase to 60 percent by 2030.

Minister Dangiwa affirmed that the government is committed to addressing the challenges posed by this population growth through effective urban planning, management, and the development of resilience and innovations to absorb expected shocks.

He emphasized, “The Federal Government is paying very thoughtful attention to the issues and challenges of urbanization. The issue of financing for affordable housing and urban infrastructure remains our cardinal focus, and we solicit collaborations from our development partners and other stakeholders. Urban dwellers now account for more than 50 percent of our population and are expected to increase to 60 percent by the year 2030.”

To mitigate the rapid urbanization trend, the government has called for accelerated action to achieve sustainable human settlement development and introduced measures to mitigate its impact.

Stakeholders in the housing sector were encouraged to leverage the ministry’s Public-Private Partnership arrangement to mobilize financing for affordable housing and urban development in the country.

The Managing Director of the Federal Housing Authority, Senator Gbenga Ashafa, emphasized that diversifying into housing construction is a promising way for the country to recover from the current global economic challenges. He noted that urban development efforts, including the construction of new cities and the regeneration of old ones, would not only provide housing but also create a more livable and secure environment for the population.

Ashafa stressed the significant value chain of the housing industry, which contributes to job creation, both directly and indirectly, employing professionals and non-professionals alike. This approach holds promise for economic growth and job opportunities in the housing sector.

Uchendu Alexis The Federal Government is actively preparing for the expected upsurge in Nigeria’s population, with a particular focus on sustainable urban development.
