This new role was highlighted during a recent tree planting ceremony held at the Infantry Zoological Garden in Jaji Military Cantonment, Kaduna.

Henry Wesley, the Chief of Special Services and Programs of the Nigerian Army, emphasized the importance of this initiative. Speaking at the ceremony, Wesley remarked, “The tree planting ceremony is both symbolic and significant, as it offers us a platform to showcase our commitment to environmental sustainability and inspire others to take up tree planting. The deforestation crisis poses serious risks to human health and food security, making our efforts crucial.”

Wesley noted that this initiative precedes the development of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and is relatively novel in the Sub-Saharan African context. “Such initiatives are rare in this region. The Nigerian Army has established a dedicated department, the Nigerian Army Farms and Ranches, focused on crop development and animal husbandry. This new effort represents an expansion of our department’s scope and aims to raise awareness among younger generations about the importance of environmental conservation.”

The ceremony also marked a significant milestone for the Infantry Zoological Garden, which is set to be renamed the Nigerian Army Conservation Education Centre. According to Kelvin Aligbe, the Commander of the Nigerian Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC), the centre will evolve to better serve its conservation and educational goals.

“This transformation will provide a therapeutic environment while also serving as a hub for conservation advocacy,” said Aligbe. “When I was the Commandant of the Nigerian Army School of Infantry in 2020, we envisioned this space not only as a place for family enjoyment but also as a resource for promoting environmental awareness.”

Aligbe further explained that the centre features specimens of all the Nigerian Army’s mascots, creating a unique repository of the army’s symbols. “Rather than traveling to different units, visitors can see all the mascots here. This facility represents a living library of the Nigerian Army’s heritage and serves as a testament to our commitment to global conservation and wildlife preservation,” he added.

Nigerian Army has announced its commitment to lead and inspire widespread tree planting and food cultivation across the country.
