The Northern Youth Leaders Forum (NYLF) has conveyed its message to President Bola Tinubu, urging him to avoid what they perceive as skewed appointments, akin to his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari. While the youths acknowledge that northerners have no grounds to protest against Tinubu’s perceived ‘lopsided’ appointments, they emphasize their stance that the country should not perpetuate the same patterns.<\/p>\n

Some prominent northern figures have voiced their concerns regarding President Tinubu’s alleged preference for the south in his choice of appointees. Notably, Islamic cleric Ahmad Gumi claimed that President Tinubu had appointed more Southern Christians to key positions while overlooking northerners who, in his opinion, had supported him in his quest for power.<\/p>\n

Speaking to the press in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, the National President of NYLF, Elliot Afiyo, pointed out that Tinubu seems to be continuing the legacy of perceived lopsided appointments inherited from Buhari.<\/p>\n

Afiyo revealed that, from 2015 to 2023, Buhari’s administration had created a perceived appointment gap of 80 percent favoring the north and 20 percent favoring the south.<\/p>\n

However, Afiyo appealed to President Tinubu not to replicate Buhari’s approach in selecting his appointees. He emphasized that the country must not perpetuate past mistakes. Afiyo noted that previous Nigerian leaders, since the country’s independence, have often made biased appointments, often favoring their own regions at the expense of others.<\/p>\n

The youth leader also highlighted that former President Olusegun Obasanjo made efforts to bridge this gap when he assumed power in 1999.<\/p>\n
