The Abia State Government has shed light on the discovery of 70 corpses and a significant number of skeletons in the vicinity of the Lokpanta Cattle Market, situated in the Umunneochi Local Government Area. The Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, revealed that comprehensive information regarding this discovery is currently in the possession of law enforcement agencies.

The startling revelation was made during Governor Otti’s monthly media chat, where he shared that security agents had uncovered these decomposing remains during a forest raid near the cattle market. This disconcerting discovery prompted the state government to transition the cattle market from a weekly event to a daily operation. The primary objective of this transition is to ensure the safety and well-being of the local residents.

The decision to modify the market’s schedule has raised concerns among leaders of the northern community within the market. They have expressed worries that this shift may be an attempt to displace them and have asserted that they had no prior knowledge of the reported corpses.

Addressing questions about the whereabouts of the recovered corpses, the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Kazie Uko, clarified that security agencies are in possession of this information and will release it once their investigations are concluded. Uko stated, “Governor Otti’s statement was based on the report provided by the security personnel. The security agencies will disclose the location of the corpses, as it pertains to a security matter.”

Concerning the fate of the corpses and whether they will receive a mass burial or be made available for potential identification by family members, the Chief Press Secretary remarked, “Once the security agencies complete their investigation, they will determine the appropriate course of action.”

The discovery of these corpses has raised questions and concerns in the community, and the state government is working in coordination with law enforcement agencies to provide clarity and address any related issues.
