Unions representing the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) employees have raised objections to Senate President Sen. Godswill Akpabio’s description of some board members as “executive board members.” In a joint letter addressed to Sen. Akpabio, the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN) and the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporation, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE) expressed their concerns, stating that this reference goes against the FERMA Act and undermines the career progression of agency staff.<\/p>\n

Sen. Akpabio had recently announced the formation of a new FERMA board but used the term “executive board members” for some members, which deviated from the traditional nomenclature of board members.<\/p>\n

In their joint letter, signed by Mr. Paul Onimisi, ASCSN Chairman, and Mr. Abdulmumin Idris, AUPCTRE Chairman, the unions described the Senate President’s announcement as disheartening and demoralizing for the agency’s employees.<\/p>\n

They argued that designating some members as “executive board members” with the eventual goal of taking over departmental responsibilities contradicts the FERMA Act’s provisions and hinders the career development of the agency’s workforce. This approach, the unions stated, will not be in the best interests of FERMA in fulfilling its mandate.<\/p>\n

The letter pointed out that such appointments are inconsistent with the FERMA Act and disrupt the career progression typical in government agencies. This departure from the norm can be counterproductive and negatively impact the morale of career officers, as it suggests an intention to replace them with executive board members in running agency departments.<\/p>\n

The unions respectfully urged the Senate President to confirm the board members’ appointments in alignment with the Act that established the board. Failing to do so, they warned, would set in motion a series of events that could disrupt the agency’s structure, derail its mission, and dishearten its workforce.
