Okonkwo described the President’s Sunday broadcast as “bland” and “uninspiring,” failing to address the core issues raised by the widespread demonstrations.

In an interview with newsmen on Tuesday, Okonkwo expressed disappointment, stating, “The people are protesting due to hunger, hardship, deprivation, and degradation. The President’s speech was a forced response to these grievances.”

Okonkwo further criticized the timing and content of the address, noting that the speech was “leaked before the day,” which he found both annoying and indicative of poor media management. “If I were a media aide, I would have preferred no speech at all over a poorly executed one,” he said, suggesting that the President’s media team should face accountability for the mishandling.

According to Okonkwo, the President’s address failed to address any of the protesters’ demands or concerns effectively. He emphasized the importance of protest in a democratic society but condemned the violent actions of a minority involved in the demonstrations.

In his critique, Okonkwo also proposed several reforms. He suggested that President Tinubu should consider reducing the size of his cabinet and reversing the decision to acquire a new presidential jet. Instead of removing petrol subsidies and introducing palliatives, which he claims are inadequately distributed, Okonkwo advocated for the restoration of subsidies on petrol and electricity tariffs. He argued that “subsidy itself is a palliative” and that returning these subsidies would provide more immediate relief to the populace.

Okonkwo also condemned the current administration for deteriorating the standard of living in Nigeria. He called for measures to restore productivity and create a more favorable business climate to support economic growth and stability.

Kenneth Okonkwo, a former spokesman for the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council in 2023, has sharply criticized President Bola Tinubu’s recent address to the nation regarding the #EndBadGovernance protests.
