Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has shared a heartfelt account of the final moments of legendary Nigerian singer Onyeka Onwenu, who passed away on Tuesday night in Lagos.<\/p>\n

In a post on his official X handle, Obi revealed that he was present at the birthday celebration of Stella Okoli, Managing Director of Emzor Pharmaceuticals, where Onwenu gave what would be her final performance. The singer reportedly collapsed shortly after her iconic performance and was rushed to a hospital on Victoria Island.<\/p>\n

“I was present at the event where the iconic song star, Onyeka Onwenu, performed a couple of her songs ending up with her famous song, \u2018One Love Keep Us Together\u2019,\u201d Obi recounted. “It was a beautiful performance, but little did we know it would be her final bow. Just about a few minutes after her performance, she sat down and drank some water and immediately collapsed.”<\/p>\n

Obi followed Onwenu to the hospital and witnessed the medical team\u2019s efforts to save her life. “I watched in pain as the doctors and medical staff fought tirelessly and battled to save her life, doing everything possible to bring her back to life,” he said. Unfortunately, after about two hours of intense struggle, the singer was pronounced dead.<\/p>\n

Reflecting on the devastating experience, Obi said it was a “tragic event that will forever be etched in my memory.”<\/p>\n

Obi extended his condolences to Onwenu’s family, friends, and loved ones. “My heart goes out to her children and family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.
