This donation aims to support the digitization of the NPC’s birth registry and transition approximately 40 million existing analogue records to a digital platform.

The support from the UK will not only aid in modernizing Nigeria’s birth registry but will also enhance the NPC’s capacity to perform verification checks for UK Visas and Immigration. This initiative is part of a broader effort to combat child trafficking and visa abuse.

The donated equipment includes high-quality laptops, scanners, and internet connectivity devices. These resources will be distributed across 17 NPC state offices that handle the majority of checks for the British High Commission. This initiative reflects the UK Government’s broader commitment to assisting Nigeria in advancing its civil registration and vital statistics systems.

At the handover ceremony in Abuja, Acting British High Commissioner Mrs. Gill Lever highlighted the importance of this donation. She stated, “This is the second phase of our equipment donation. Since October 2023, NPC has successfully conducted over 130 verification checks of birth and death certificates in collaboration with UK Visas and Immigration Verification officers based at the British High Commission in Abuja. During this period, one in three cases was identified as counterfeit, which has been crucial for supporting UK Visa decision-making. This process has allowed genuine cases to be processed efficiently for Nigerian visa applicants.”

Hon. Nasir Isa Kwarra, Chairman of the National Population Commission, expressed gratitude for the UK’s support. He remarked, “The UK’s commitment to document verification and digitization aligns perfectly with our vision of developing a comprehensive, universal electronic civil registration system. This system will transcend borders, empower citizens, and drive economic planning and good governance.”

Kwarra emphasized the importance of creating an interconnected data system where every birth, stillbirth, and death is accurately recorded.
