A faction within the All Progressives Congress (APC), known as the Ondo Liberation Initiative (OLI), has delivered an ultimatum to Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State, demanding that he addresses the concerns of the state’s citizens within a seven-day period. Alternatively, the group’s spokesman, Johnson Alabi, announced that they would be compelled to seek an interpretation of Section 193 (2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria concerning the transfer of power to the Deputy Governor in the Governor’s absence.<\/p>\n
In a press briefing on Thursday, Alabi highlighted the group’s discontent with the absence of Governor Akeredolu from the state since his return from a medical vacation. According to Alabi, the governor’s prolonged absence is adversely affecting the social, political, and economic development of Ondo State.<\/p>\n
He expressed concern that the state, along with Deputy Governor Hon. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has faced significant challenges in representing itself among other states in the country. Alabi pointed out that the state’s absence from crucial gatherings, such as the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting and the recent National Police Council meeting held in Abuja, has hindered Ondo’s participation in important national matters.<\/p>\n
Alabi asserted, “By the provisions of Section 14 of the Nigerian Constitution, sovereignty belongs to the people, and their security and welfare ‘shall’ be the primary purpose of government.” He emphasized the group’s unwavering commitment to seeking good governance and accountability for the people of Ondo State, as mandated by the Constitution.<\/p>\n
Alabi also criticized those who question the right of Ondo State’s citizens to demand good governance, asserting that it is their constitutional entitlement.
