The United Kingdom High Commissioner in Nigeria, Richard Montgomery, has lauded Nigeria’s remarkable progress under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu. Speaking at the 2023 Cabinet Retreat, Montgomery commended Nigeria’s emergence as a regional and global powerhouse, attributing it to visionary reforms and multi-sector reorganizations initiated by the Tinubu administration.<\/p>\n

Addressing a distinguished audience of ministers, presidential aides, permanent secretaries, and top government functionaries, Montgomery acknowledged the substantial economic, security, and social challenges facing Nigeria. However, he expressed unwavering confidence in the President’s reform initiatives, which he views as crucial steps toward addressing these challenges.<\/p>\n

Montgomery emphasized Nigeria’s immense potential, stating, “Mr. President, I’d like to recognize Nigeria as a growing regional and global powerhouse. You are likely to become the third-largest country in the world by 2050. I applaud your plans to stabilize the economy and set it on a higher growth path to prosperity, on which so much else depends.”<\/p>\n

The UK’s High Commissioner assured Nigeria of the United Kingdom’s steadfast support, emphasizing the importance of mutual respect and partnership between the two nations.<\/p>\n

“The UK stands ready to support in the spirit of mutual respect. The UK is prepared to bolster our partnerships across a range of areas, and I wish you and your government all the best wishes and goodwill in your work ahead,” Montgomery affirmed.<\/p>\n

While acknowledging Nigeria’s significant challenges in the domains of security, the economy, and society, Montgomery commended President Tinubu’s bold economic reforms and his leadership within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). He also praised Nigeria’s active engagement on the international stage, particularly in the G-20, and its advocacy for democracy.<\/p>\n
