The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has taken a strong stance against the use of abandoned buildings in Abuja as hideouts by criminals. Speaking before the Senate Committee on Appropriations while defending the N100 billion allocation for the Federal Capital Territory in the 2023 supplementary budget of N2.17 trillion, Wike vowed to demolish these structures.<\/p>\n
During his address, Wike emphasized the importance of addressing the issue of abandoned buildings, which have become havens for criminals. He pledged to bring down all such structures and take control of them, highlighting that criminals frequently seek refuge in these vacant properties after committing various crimes.<\/p>\n
Wike articulated his commitment to improving security in the FCT, stating, “When people commit crimes, they will come and hide inside them. I have confidence that things will turn around.” He assured that the security situation in the Federal Capital Territory would continue to improve progressively.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, Wike addressed the issue of security threats like “one chance” crimes and expressed his belief that the situation would significantly improve with the commencement of metro bus operations.<\/p>\n
In a related development, the Minister of Housing, Ahmed Dangiwa, defended the N100 billion budget allocation for his ministry. He explained that these funds would be utilized for the construction of housing estates across the country. Dangiwa revealed that the federal government’s plan involves constructing 1,000 housing estates in each state of the federation.
