Tesla is recalling 1.85 million vehicles in the United States due to the risk of software failure that prevents detecting an unlatched hood, the automaker announced. The issue could lead to the hood fully opening and obstructing the driver’s view, increasing the risk of a crash, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported.<\/p>\n
Starting in mid-June, Tesla has been rolling out an over-the-air software update to rectify the problem, NHTSA confirmed. The new software can detect an open hood and warn drivers. This recall impacts Model 3, Model S, Model X, and Model Y vehicles manufactured between 2020 and 2024, which are equipped with a hood latch made in China by Magna Closures Co Ltd.<\/p>\n
Tesla began investigating complaints of unexpected hood openings in specific Model 3 and Model Y vehicles in China in March. The company then initiated a latch hardware recovery and vehicle inspections. Although fewer incidents were reported in Europe and North America, Tesla conducted engineering studies in these regions last month, eventually deciding to issue the recall earlier this month.<\/p>\n
To date, Tesla has received three reports of the issue in the U.S but has not reported any crashes or injuries related to the recall. This marks Tesla’s largest recall since December when it recalled 2.03 million U.S. vehicles to install new safeguards in its Autopilot system. However, NHTSA later opened a probe into 20 crashes involving vehicles with the new Autopilot update, citing ‘several concerns’ regarding the initial recall.<\/p>\n
