Nigerian actress Juliana Olayode has strongly criticized the 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony for its portrayal of religious themes, notably a controversial reinterpretation of Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper” featuring drag queens, a transgender model, and a performer dressed as the Greek god of wine.

In a post on Instagram dated July 29, 2024, Olayode expressed her outrage, calling the performance “completely unacceptable,” “bizarre,” and “disrespectful.” She argued that the Olympics, as a sports event, should focus solely on athletics rather than religion or gender identity, emphasizing that the performance disrespected people’s faith.

Olayode voiced her frustration over what she views as a growing trend of disrespect toward Christianity, criticizing the silence of the Christian community in the face of perceived attacks. She urged that religious sensitivity should be respected, stating, “People of other faiths speak up without hesitation at any sign of disrespect to their religion.”

She further accused the Olympics organizers of disrespecting Christianity, claiming that the event is part of a larger trend of cultural and religious disrespect in various media. “The world constantly attacks and disrespects Christianity, whether in music, movies, news, or sports,” she said.

In response to the backlash, Paris 2024 spokesperson Anne Descamps issued an apology, stating, “There was never an intention to offend any religious group. The ceremony aimed to celebrate community tolerance. If any offense was taken, we sincerely apologize.”
