{"id":41156,"date":"2024-07-30T15:01:52","date_gmt":"2024-07-30T15:01:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=41156"},"modified":"2024-07-30T15:02:28","modified_gmt":"2024-07-30T15:02:28","slug":"thousands-of-dollars-flown-out-of-nigeria-every-hour-efcc-reveals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2024\/07\/30\/thousands-of-dollars-flown-out-of-nigeria-every-hour-efcc-reveals\/","title":{"rendered":"Thousands of Dollars Flown Out of Nigeria Every Hour, EFCC Reveals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hundreds of thousands of dollars have been stated by the International Police Organisation (INTERPOL), to be flown out of Nigeria to other African countries and around the world on an hourly basis.<br \/>\nGarba Baba Umar, the INTERPOL Vice President for Africa, who spoke at the EFCC Academy, Abuja stated this when he declared a four-day workshop for Nigerian law enforcement agencies open.<\/p>\n<p>The organisation noted that evidence had shown that every hour, hundreds of thousands of dollars are flowing out of Nigeria to the region and across the world, laundered before it reaches the pockets of criminals to enjoy the profits of their crimes, while the hardworking and honest Nigerians pay the price of crime.<br \/>\nIt was also noted that money laundering across Africa and the entire world had taken a disturbing shape.<\/p>\n<p>The concerted efforts of every security agency in Nigeria and other countries were called by Umar to address the issue.<\/p>\n<p>However, the INTERPOL official, said the organisation has launched what he described as \u201cSilver Notices Against Money Laundering\u201d, saying it is in a bid to frontally tackle the scourge of money laundering and illicit financial flows across the world, especially Africa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith every successful laundering of criminal money, our country becomes more prone to crime. More drugs, more fraud, more corruption and more violence. Every time criminal money is successfully laundered, our financial institutions take an additional blow\u2026\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Umar stressed that hard times await money launderers as the Initiative \u201cSilver Notices\u201d would make illicit funds more difficult to launder in any part of the world.<\/p>\n<p>While speaking on the theme of the workshop: \u201cStrengthening Capacity and Coordination against Financial Crimes\u201d Umar noted that financial crimes had become transnational and law enforcement agencies needed regular training for their workforce to be ahead of fraudsters.<\/p>\n<p>At the event, Ola Olukoyede, the Executive Chairman of the EFCC, harped on the need for enhanced collaboration in tackling financial crimes.<\/p>\n<p>Olukoyede, who spoke through the Director, Fraud Risk Assessment and Control of the EFCC, Francis Usani, said the complex nature of corruption across the world could only be broken by the might of collaborative actions by every stakeholder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe daunting nature of the fight against corruption in Nigeria and the world at large deserve serious collaboration among organisations saddled with the responsibility of fighting corruption\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Corruption has been identified as the major stumbling block to Nigeria\u2019s development with stakeholders calling for more stringent resolve to fight against corruption.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hundreds of thousands of dollars have been stated by the International Police Organisation (INTERPOL), to be flown out of Nigeria to other African countries and around the world on an hourly basis.
