Cholera Outbreak have been said to claim the lives of seven persons, mostly children, across eight local government areas of Delta state owing to poor sanitary environment, The Delta State government said.<\/p>\n
Dr Joseph Onojaeme, the Delta State Commissioner for Health, made this known at a press conference organised to give update on the state\u2019s interventions on cholera outbreak in the state.<\/p>\n
The state recorded its first case mid-February at Warri South-West local government area with seven deaths, majorly children, before the second and third outbreaks.
\nWhile maintaining that the outbreak was a national challenge, Dr Onojaeme advised on the need for regular hand washing, intake of potable water and maintenance of clean and hygienic environment.
\nHe further explained that cholera is a bacterial infection spread by the consumption of infected water and food resulting in passing watery stool, dehydration and electrolyte.<\/p>\n
She affirmed that the state government\u2019s intervention was adequate, but however, noted that the state did not isolate cholera patients because the disease is not airborne, \u201cbut we treat victims and advise them to avoid the risk factors.
\n\u201cCholera has a 12 days incubation period, and within this period, a victim that is without a symptom can still spread it to others. However, regular habit of hygiene can help to contain it.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have done so much to respond to the challenge with a view to controlling it through the Epidemiology Unit of the Health Ministry.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are continuing our control process with adequate advocacy. Cholera is a national outbreak which gives the intervention approach a national importance. So, we are doing our best to curtail it on all sides,\u201d the Commissioner said.<\/p>\n
Earlier, the Commissioner for Information, Dr Ifeanyi Osuoza said the press conference was organised to enable his colleague give a comprehensive update on the cholera outbreak in the state to the public.<\/p>\n
He therefore, urged on the people to support the effort of the government to achieve a holistic result in terms of defeating the scourge.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
