Telecommunications subscribers in Nigeria have expressed their gratitude towards the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for instructing Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to reconnect Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) cards that were recently barred from making and receiving calls.

Adeolu Ogunbanjo, National President of the National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers (NATCOMS), praised the NCC’s decision in a telephone interview with DAILY POST on Monday. This directive follows the NCC’s order to MNOs, including MTN, Globacom, Airtel, and 9mobile, to restore service to all consumers disconnected over the weekend due to unsuccessful National Identity Number (NIN) and SIM linkage.

Ogunbanjo highlighted that the NCC’s responsiveness to the plight of Nigerians is commendable. He emphasized that the directive indicates the recent disconnections were unrelated to the planned protests from August 1-10 regarding economic hardship.

“This directive from NCC is a laudable development, ensuring that telecoms subscribers disconnected over the weekend are reconnected. It shows that NCC, as a regulator, is actively addressing the concerns of subscribers,” Ogunbanjo stated.

On Monday, numerous subscribers visited the offices and centers of MNOs following the disconnection of their lines over the weekend. The MNOs had been enforcing a mandatory linkage of NIN with SIM cards since December 2020, as directed by the NCC.

The exercise, aimed at curbing insecurity in Nigeria, had its deadlines extended multiple times to provide subscribers with more time to comply. The most recent deadline, set for July 31, 2024, was announced on April 15.
