The Imo State Police Command on Wednesday issued a clarification regarding the arrest of the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Joe Ajaero, in Owerri.<\/p>\n
According to a statement signed by ASP Okoye Henry the Imo state Police Command spokesperson, Ajaero was in Owerri as part of the Nigeria Labour Congress’ preparations for a mega protest rally in the state.<\/p>\n
He said, \u201cDuring the planning stages, discussions arose about the potential lockdown of essential facilities, particularly the airport, as part of the protest action. This led to some workers and other individuals resisting the picketing process, resulting in scuffles, heated arguments, and ultimately an attack on the NLC President by a mob.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn response to the situation, the Imo Police Command swiftly dispatched police operatives to the scene. The Officer in Charge exercised operational discretion by taking the NLC President into protective custody at the State Command Headquarters to ensure his safety and prevent any harm during the altercation. Following this, the Commissioner of Police directed that Comrade Joe Ajaero should receive medical attention at the Police Medical Services in Owerri due to the attack. He has been provided with adequate security to continue with his other legitimate engagements for the day.\u201d<\/p>\n
The statement further emphasized the existence of a court injunction from the National Industrial Court of Nigeria in Owerri, with Suit No. NICN\/OW\/41\/2023 dated 27th October, 2023. This injunction bars the NLC from conducting the intended protest rally in Owerri.<\/p>\n
The Commissioner of Police for the Imo State Police Command, CP Mohammed Ahmed Barde, urged all parties involved to comply with the court’s directives to prevent any disruptions to the existing security arrangements in Owerri and other parts of Imo State.
