Despite a recent directive by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, calling for the cleansing of the system within the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) Abuja passport office, some Nigerians who have applied for international passports continue to accuse NIS personnel of extensive extortion.<\/p>\n
Applicants for passports have expressed their concerns, disclosing that little has changed in the system, as they are still required to pay various quantities of money to NIS personnel before receiving their travel credentials. These applicants expressed their unhappiness with the continued issues they confront in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).<\/p>\n
They noted that the electronic passport application system appeared to have been compromised, leaving individuals who followed the correct application procedures with no choice but to “settle” with NIS officers in order to acquire their passports in a timely way. This alleged extortion increases the burden on candidates who are already dealing with bureaucratic red tape.<\/p>\n
Adding to their complaints, several applicants said that even when their passports were ready, they were compelled to pay an additional N5,000 before they could obtain their documents, indicating their dissatisfaction with the system.<\/p>\n
The persistent allegations of extortion within the passport application process raise concerns about the effectiveness of recent directives to address these issues.
