Nigeria is grappling with a significant fuel scarcity crisis, as numerous depots for Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, have run dry. This shortage has led to long queues at fuel stations and widespread shortages in Lagos, Ogun, parts of Abuja, Niger, and several other states across the nation.<\/p>\n
According to reports from Abuja City Journal, the situation has been exacerbated by black marketers, who have exploited the scarcity by charging exorbitant prices. In Lagos and Ogun states, fuel prices have surged to as high as N1,300 to N1,500 per litre, significantly above the official rates.<\/p>\n
The crisis began to escalate on Friday, with long queues forming at fuel stations in Abuja and Lagos. By Saturday, the situation had not improved, with residents enduring extended waits for fuel and a marked increase in fuel prices.<\/p>\n
In response to the crisis, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has issued a statement addressing the shortage. The company explained that the tightness in fuel supply and distribution was due to operational issues related to the discharge of a couple of vessels. NNPC’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye, noted, \u201cThe NNPC Ltd wishes to state that the tightness in fuel supply and distribution witnessed in some parts of Lagos and the FCT is as a result of a hitch in the discharge operations of a couple of vessels.\u201d<\/p>\n
NNPC assured the public that it is actively working with all stakeholders to address the issue and restore normal fuel distribution.
