France\u2019s high-speed rail network was hit by arson attacks that disrupted travel for hundreds of thousands of passengers on Friday, just hours before the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics.<\/p>\n

A source close to the investigation told AFP the attacks were coordinated acts of \u201csabotage\u201d.
\n\u201cThis is a massive attack on a large scale to paralyse the TGV network,\u201d SNCF told AFP, adding that many routes would be canceled.<\/p>\n

\u201cSNCF was the victim of several simultaneous malicious acts overnight,\u201d the national train operator said, adding that the attacks affected its Atlantic, northern and eastern lines.<\/p>\n

\u201cArson attacks were started to damage our facilities,\u201d it said, adding that traffic on the affected lines was \u201cheavily disrupted\u201d and the situation would last through the weekend as repairs are conducted.

\nSNCF chief executive Jean-Pierre Farandou said 800,000 passengers were affected.<\/p>\n

Transport Minister Patrice Vergriete called the attacks an \u201coutrageous criminal act\u201d that would have \u201cvery serious consequences\u201d for rail traffic throughout the weekend.
\nHe said connections towards northern, eastern and northwestern France would be halved.<\/p>\n

SNCF said trains were being diverted to different tracks \u201cbut we will have to cancel a large number of them\u201d.
\nThe southeastern line was not affected as \u201ca malicious act was foiled\u201d.<\/p>\n

SNCF urged passengers to postpone their trips and stay away from train stations.<\/p>\n

The attacks were carried out as Paris was under heavy security ahead of the opening ceremony of the Summer Olympics, with 300,000 spectators and an audience of VIPs expected at the event.<\/p>\n

The parade on Friday evening will see up to 7,500 competitors travel down a six-kilometre (four-mile) stretch of the river Seine on a flotilla of 85 boats.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
