The release of these funds is part of an ongoing effort to combat multidimensional poverty and enhance resilience among vulnerable populations.

In a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja, Suleiman Odapu, the Information and Communication Officer at the Federal CARES Support Unit (FCSU), confirmed the disbursement. He cited Abdulkarim Obaje, the National Coordinator of the NG-CARES Programme, who explained that the funds were distributed based on the results achieved by states and the FCT during the third Independent Verification Agency (IVA) assessment conducted in January 2024.

According to Mr. Obaje, Zamfara, Nasarawa, and Plateau states were the top earners, receiving N49.2 billion, N27.2 billion, and N26.3 billion respectively. These allocations were made based on the states’ performance and the effectiveness of their initiatives in addressing poverty and enhancing economic resilience.

However, Mr. Obaje noted that Kaduna and Anambra states did not present results for verification during this assessment. This lack of participation has prompted a call for all 36 states and the FCT to engage fully in the upcoming fourth IVA exercise scheduled for September 2024.

The NG-CARES Programme aims to provide significant support to state governments and the FCT in tackling the challenges of poverty and economic instability. The substantial reimbursement is intended to bolster efforts in improving the livelihoods of the poor and vulnerable, enabling the implementation of targeted social intervention programmes.

Mr. Obaje emphasized that these funds are crucial for advancing the NG-CARES Programme’s objectives and for strengthening the social safety nets designed to assist the most disadvantaged members of society.

The federal government has allocated more than N438 billion in reimbursement to 34 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as part of the Nigeria Community Action for Resilience and Economic Stimulus (NG-CARES) Programme.
