Instead, the company will implement a Privacy Sandbox approach, aimed at balancing user privacy with the needs of advertisers.

This reversal comes in response to significant feedback from the advertising industry, which expressed concerns that the elimination of third-party cookies in Chrome—the world’s most widely used browser—would severely limit their ability to collect data for personalized advertisements. Advertisers feared that this move would leave them overly dependent on Google’s own user databases for ad targeting.

Originally, the plan to phase out third-party cookies was intended to enhance user privacy by reducing the tracking of browsing activity. However, recognizing the complexities involved, Google has decided to pivot towards a new strategy that offers users greater control over their data. The updated approach will allow users to make informed decisions about third-party cookies through new privacy settings that they can adjust at any time.

Anthony Chavez, Vice President of the Google-backed Privacy Sandbox initiative, elaborated on the new strategy in a blog post:

“We are proposing an updated approach that elevates user choice. Instead of deprecating third-party cookies, we will introduce a new experience in Chrome that lets users make informed choices applicable across their web browsing, which they can adjust at any time.”

Chavez also highlighted that Google will continue to develop and invest in Privacy Sandbox APIs, which aim to enhance both privacy and functionality. A new feature, IP Protection, will be introduced in Chrome’s Incognito mode to further safeguard user information.

The Privacy Sandbox initiative is designed to improve online privacy while still supporting a robust ad-supported internet ecosystem. This initiative seeks to balance the needs of publishers, businesses, and users by encouraging privacy-enhancing technologies while preserving the ability to connect businesses with customers and provide free content.

Google’s decision to abandon the cookie phaseout comes after a period of intense scrutiny and adjustments to its initial deadlines, which were extended multiple times due to concerns about potential anti-competitive impacts. This shift in policy mirrors actions taken by Apple Inc. in 2021, when the company introduced restrictions on advertisers’ access to user data on its operating system, resulting in significant disruptions in the digital advertising market.

By Emmanuel Ogbodo Google has announced that it will not proceed with its previously planned phaseout of third-party cookies from its Chrome browser.
