Kamala Devi Harris was born in Oakland, California on October 20, 1964, the eldest of two children born to Shyamala Gopalan, a cancer researcher from India, and Donald Harris, an economist from Jamaica.<\/p>\n
She is an American politician and attorney who served as the 32nd Attorney General of California from 2011 to 2017.<\/p>\n
Harris was the first woman, the first African American, and the first Asian American to hold the office of Attorney General in California.<\/p>\n
She graduated from Howard University and the University of California, Hastings College of the Law.<\/p>\n
Harris began her career in the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office and later became the Managing Attorney of the Career Criminal Unit in the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office.<\/p>\n
She was elected District Attorney of San Francisco in 2003 and re-elected in 2007.<\/p>\n
Harris was elected to the United States Senate in 2016, becoming the second African American woman and the first South Asian American to serve in the Senate.<\/p>\n
