This appeal was made by Okorafor Okechukwu, NUT’s Legal Director, during a recent hearing in Abuja. The session, led by Hon. Isiaka Ibrahim, focused on the planned restructuring of various government agencies and commissions.

Okechukwu stressed that senior secondary education is pivotal in shaping the career paths of students, making adequate funding essential. He highlighted that this educational phase is where students decide their future professions, thereby influencing their long-term career success.

In addition to Okechukwu’s call for enhanced funding, stakeholders from various Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) voiced their concerns and recommendations at the hearing. A major point of contention was the proposed merger of the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) with other regulatory bodies. Zikora Ibeh, representing Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa, argued against this move, suggesting that Nollywood, Nigeria’s flourishing film industry, is too significant to be managed by a small department within another agency.

Ibeh emphasized that the NFVCB has accumulated considerable expertise over the years, making it essential for it to remain an autonomous body. “The NFVCB has generated expertise over the years, so it is our observation that it should not be merged with other agencies,” she said, stressing the importance of maintaining a dedicated regulatory body for the film sector, which contributes significantly to the national economy.

Similarly, the Nigeria Tobacco Control Alliance voiced its support for the NFVCB’s continued autonomy. Chibuike Nwokorie, the Program Manager, highlighted the rapid emergence of skit makers and the need for stringent control over smoking scenes in media. He argued that the NFVCB should oversee these regulations to ensure that smoking scenes are properly managed and not diluted by merging the agency with others. “We are working to ensure that our screens are free of smoking scenes,” Nwokorie noted, emphasizing the necessity of having an impartial agency like the NFVCB to regulate this issue.

During the committee session, Hon. Isiaka Ibrahim expressed concerns regarding the secondary education system, particularly the presence of two principals in some schools, which he believes complicates administration and affects the quality of education.

In addition to the discussions on education and regulatory bodies, the committee held closed-door meetings with representatives from the National Emergency Management Agencies (NEMA), the Nigeria Export Promotion Council (NEPC), and the Free Trade Zones Authority. These meetings aimed to further examine the restructuring plans and their potential impact on various sectors.

By Gabriella Ogbu The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has called for increased and sustainable funding for senior secondary education across Nigeria, underscoring the critical role this level of education plays in career development for students.
